Why Word-to-Page Estimates Matter for Students and Writers

Professors and instructors assign essays with page limits (e.g., '5–7 pages, double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman'). But Microsoft Word's page count depends heavily on your formatting settings — headers, footers, and fonts affect the number significantly. Using this calculator before writing helps you scope the project accurately.

Common sources of confusion: APA format requires double-spacing with 12pt Times New Roman, while MLA uses the same font but with 1-inch margins and specific header requirements. Chicago Manual style has slightly different defaults. This calculator accounts for each format.

Who Uses a Words-to-Pages Calculator

College Students

Planning essays, research papers, or thesis chapters to hit page count requirements before a deadline.

Academic Writers

Estimating submission length for journal articles, conference papers, or book chapters with strict word limits.

Content Writers

Estimating how long a blog post or article draft will be when designed for print or PDF distribution.

Authors & Novelists

Calculating how a word count (e.g., 80,000 words) translates to a physical book page count for a specific trim size.

How to Calculate Pages from Word Count

  1. Enter your total word count in the input field.
  2. Select your line spacing: Single, 1.5x, or Double spaced.
  3. Choose your font and font size (12pt Times New Roman is the most common academic standard).
  4. Select margins: Standard (1 inch, APA/MLA default) or Narrow (0.75 inch).
  5. The page count updates instantly. Hover over the result to see the calculation breakdown.

Reference: Standard Word Counts Per Page

Double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins (APA/MLA default):
• 1 page ≈ 250–275 words
• 5 pages ≈ 1,250–1,375 words
• 10 pages ≈ 2,500–2,750 words

Single-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins:
• 1 page ≈ 500–550 words
• 5 pages ≈ 2,500–2,750 words

These are averages — actual page count depends on heading styles, paragraph spacing, and figures/tables included in the document.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator uses typographic constants measured from standard word processing environments. The words-per-page value is computed based on: the average word length (5.1 characters), character width at your chosen font and size, line height (line spacing × font size × 1.2), usable page width after margins, and usable page height after margins and any header/footer.

The resulting words-per-page figure is then divided into your input word count to produce the page estimate. The calculation matches Microsoft Word output to within 0–2 pages for documents under 20,000 words.

Approximately 2 pages double-spaced, or 1 page single-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with standard margins.
Approximately 8 pages double-spaced in standard APA/MLA format, or 4 pages single-spaced.
Yes. Arial and Calibri are slightly wider than Times New Roman at the same point size, producing slightly more pages per word. The difference is typically 5–10% for common academic fonts at 12pt.
At a typical novel trim size (6×9 inches, 12pt font, 1-inch margins, single-spaced), 100 pages is approximately 25,000–30,000 words.
