Why Passport Photo Size Matters for Applications

Government ID and visa applications have strict photo requirements because the images are scanned into biometric databases using automated facial recognition. The face must occupy a specific percentage of the frame. If your photo is too large, too small, or the wrong aspect ratio, the system (or human reviewer) will reject it.

Common rejection reasons: wrong pixel dimensions, incorrect aspect ratio (not matching the required ratio), face too close or too far from the top edge, or the file being too large for the upload portal.

Supported Passport & ID Photo Standards

US Passport (2×2 inch)

51×51mm, 600×600px at 300 DPI. Face must fill 70–80% of the frame. Required for US passport and visa applications.

UK Passport (35×45mm)

35mm wide by 45mm tall. The face should be between 29–34mm from chin to crown. Standard for British passports and driving licenses.

Schengen Visa (35×45mm)

Same dimensions as UK passport. Used for visa applications to EU Schengen Area countries.

Indonesia KTP / Passport

Indonesian national ID requires 3×4 cm photos. Passport uses 4×6 cm. This tool handles both dimensions.

How to Resize a Photo to Passport Size

  1. Upload your photo by clicking or dragging it into the upload area.
  2. Select your target country/standard from the presets (US, UK, Schengen, Indonesia KTP, etc.).
  3. The tool automatically sets the correct pixel dimensions (e.g., 600×600 for US passport).
  4. Click Resize to process. A preview will show your photo at the correct dimensions.
  5. Download as PNG or JPG. Print at 300 DPI for physical documents.

Tips for a Passport Photo That Will Be Accepted

Before resizing, make sure your photo meets the content requirements: neutral background (white or off-white), face looking directly at the camera, eyes open and visible, no glasses (new ICAO requirement), and no hats or head coverings (except for religious reasons).

Take the photo in good natural lighting to avoid harsh shadows on your face or the background. For best results, stand against a plain white wall and have someone take the photo from arm's length rather than using a selfie.

Understanding Passport Photo Dimension Standards

Passport photo standards are defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Document 9303, which most countries follow. The ICAO standard specifies a 35×45mm size with the head height (chin to crown) between 32–36mm. The US uses a square 2×2 inch format, which is an exception to the global standard.

For digital submissions, the pixel dimensions should correspond to the physical dimensions at 300 DPI (dots per inch). A 35×45mm photo at 300 DPI is 413×532 pixels. A 2×2 inch photo at 300 DPI is 600×600 pixels.
