Instagram Aspect Ratio Requirements Explained
Instagram supports four aspect ratios for feed posts: Square (1:1), Portrait (4:5), Landscape (1.91:1), and Stories/Reels (9:16). If you upload an image outside these ratios, Instagram auto-crops it — usually cutting parts you didn't intend to remove.
The 4:5 portrait ratio (1080×1350px) takes up the most vertical space in the feed, making it the most effective ratio for maximizing visibility and engagement. Reels and Stories must be 9:16 (1080×1920px) for full-screen display without black bars or auto-cropping.
Supported Social Media Crop Presets
Instagram Square (1:1)
1080×1080px — the classic Instagram format. Works for grid posts and profile photos. Balanced and always consistent.
Instagram Portrait (4:5)
1080×1350px — takes up maximum vertical feed space. Best for portrait photos, fashion, and product shots.
Instagram Reels / TikTok (9:16)
1080×1920px — full-screen vertical format for Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
YouTube Thumbnail (16:9)
1280×720px — the standard widescreen thumbnail format for YouTube video thumbnails.

Cropping Tips for Better Instagram Performance
Position the subject's eyes at the upper third of the frame for portrait photos. This uses the rule of thirds and creates a more visually balanced crop that tends to perform better on Instagram.
For the 9:16 Reels format, leave 15% of space at the top and bottom of the frame clear of text or important elements — Instagram overlays the caption, username, and action buttons in these zones, which can obscure your content.
Why Aspect Ratios Matter on Social Media
Stories and Reels are always displayed at 9:16 (full screen). If you upload a 1:1 square as a Story, Instagram adds black bars to fill the sides, wasting valuable screen space. Always match your content to the format's native ratio for maximum visual impact.
